Objectives :

The high emission of pollutants in the air and building surfaces coated with low permeability materials often result in lower quality of indoor air environments. The passive modulation of temperature, relative humidity and level of contaminants can be aided by the use of porous materials showing high capacity for absorbing / releasing the moisture. Materials with efflorescent and hygroscopic properties help to minimize the risk of creation of unhealthier conditions. Simultaneously, its origin can help to achieve sustainability issues in the construction sector, since materials might derive from renewable sources, include recycled components, or lower embodied energy. The geopolymeric binders, processed from industrial wastes (eg., from the pulp industry), can be developed and applied as coatings of interior walls, showing a porous structure that assures desirable hygroscopic properties. Different processing pathways will be explored to optimize this functionality
